Robert Lockwood Jr. Celebration

Updated: Nov 24

Via Cool Cleveland:

"Blues guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Robert Lockwood Jr. was a towering presence in the Cleveland blues scene for decades. He was born on March 27, 1915 and came north to Chicago in 1950 in the Great Migration, connecting with that city’s vibrant blues community. He performed and/or recorded with legends such as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Otis Spann.

A decade later, he moved to Cleveland where he played with his various lineups of the All Stars in bars across the city for the next four and a half decades, performing until a few months before his death in 2006 at the age of 91. There are few area blues musicians who DIDN’T play with him at one point, and more who were influenced by the eclectic style he developed as a result of his diverse background.

It’s a bit late this year, but once again, the blues community will assemble, this time at the Treelawn in the Waterloo Arts District, to honor his 110th “Heavenly Birthday Celebration,” as well as the first Robert Lockwood Jr. Legacy Awards Ceremony. The event will feature a truly stellar lineup of local blues performers including Wallace Coleman who played harmonica with Lockwood for a couple of decades, All Stars members D.C Carnes and Benny Mostello, Gene Schwartz & the G-Force, Charlie Christopherson, Travis Haddix, Bob Frank, Taylor Lamborn, Max Stakolich, Bob Corlett, Chris Stovicek, Mark Ryan, Austin Walkin’ Cane, Gina Stutzman and Colin Dussault.

The event will include a screening of the 25-minute “Lost Robert Lockwood film” by Jeff Dyson at 3pm and an all-star Q&A panel. Get tickets here."

I'm thrilled to be joining some of the best musicians around to celebrate the life and legacy of Robert Lockwood Jr.
